Kids are often told to eat their fruits and vegetables to stay healthy, but it could make them happier.

A recent study links unhealthy diets to depression in teens. The study shows that young people who had high sodium levels and low potassium levels were more likely to show signs of depression and that shifting to a more healthy diet has the potential to improve a person’s mental health.

A local therapist says depression and unhealthy diets can become a cycle for some.

Huntsville Psychotherapy & Counseling Services Counselor Monretta Vega said, “Because we are already dealing with those feelings of depression, it just kind of intensifies because now I don’t feel energetic. I feel lethargic, because I just ate this entire pizza.”

The study suggests teens avoid eating highly processed foods and opt for whole foods.
