"Smart Careers" helping students plan for the future

The Huntsville Madison County Chamber recently launched the online program Smart Careers at ASmartPlace to get students career ready.

If you're sitting at home thinking "What's next?" or know a high school senior who isn't sure what their next move will be, there is a new program that can help!

The Huntsville Madison County Chamber recently launched a program called Smart Careers at ASmartPlace to get students career ready.

Workforce Recruitment Director, Katelyn Sides Baker, said, "The Chamber Foundation has created this career prep curriculum. They have created these 'careers in the cloud' videos and all these great resources, online resources for teachers, students, and parents when it comes to career readiness."

They've created a free 10-unit curriculum that can be used for students of all ages.

Workforce Education Specialist, Kent Ballard, said, "Regardless of whether it's a 7th, 8th grader, regardless of whether it's a 9th grader who typically would have taken this class, it's really wide open to all grades, and it really does challenge those students to really think where am I going, what do I want to do?"

The program is not just for students in Madison County. They also want to build the workforce as Madison County grows.

"We're trying to get creative with how we're still recruiting talent to our area," said Baker." One of those ways right now is that our Smart Place on the Road, which is kind of our recruitment trips we will take with companies to a college campus, so we're going to be doing that virtually."

Even though there's a pandemic, businesses are still hiring. They will host a virtual career fair on May 13-15.

If you're a business looking to hire, you can join in on the career fair. For more information, click here.
