River Heritage Trail in Florence set to open in May

The community is invited to the grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sunday, May 5, from 3 to 5 p.m.

FLORENCE, Ala. — River Heritage Trail is set to open up in May this year. Florence Mayor Andrew Betterton, along with the Florence City Council, Florence Parks & Recreation, and Florence Planning and Community Development, have invited the community for the grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony of the River Heritage Trail on Sunday, May 5, from 3 to 5 p.m.

The River Heritage Trail grand opening will have an afternoon of music and exploration. People can immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the trail while enjoying live music and local food trucks, including Off-The-Hook and Flashy Funnel Cakes.

Scheduled for 4 p.m., the event will feature speeches from community leaders, followed by the official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the trail's opening to the public.

Representing a significant milestone for Florence, the River Heritage Trail project unveils the inaugural link of the city's River Heritage Trail, spanning about one mile along the scenic Tennessee River canal. This trail segment connects the River Heritage Park trailhead to the Patton Island Overlook trailhead, providing residents and visitors with a scenic pathway to explore. 

Interpretative displays will be placed along the trail highlight the rich history of the Tennessee River, while several overlook points offer scenic views.

"We are thrilled to announce the grand opening of the River Heritage Trail, a project that embodies our commitment to preserving our natural heritage and enhancing the quality of life for our community," remarked Mayor Andrew Betterton. "This trail represents a collaborative effort among various stakeholders and underscores our shared dedication to creating recreational opportunities that foster connections with our environment and history."

People of all ages are encouraged to join in the celebration.
