ATHENS, Ala. — An investigation now underway after a suspect is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Athens.
According to Athens Police, officers responded to a call of the suspect threatening a homeowner with a gun. When police arrived, the suspect fled the scene. Officers asked the suspect to "give up the gun" multiple times. The suspect shot the gun and continued to try and flee the scene again, heading into a residential neighborhood on Songbird Drive.
An officer then used a taser on the suspect. Officials say despite being hit by the taser the suspect pointed his gun at the officers.
The suspect was shot around 7:20 p.m. and died at the scene.
The man has been identified by Limestone County Coroner Mike West as Maurice A. White, 40, of Mill St. in Athens. His body was taken to the Alabama Dept. of Forensic Science in Huntsville for an autopsy.
Police say there is no one else was involved and there is no longer a threat to the public.
The State Bureau of Investigations will oversee the investigation.
