Limestone County warden accused of growing hallucinogenic mushrooms

Chadwick Crabtree and wife Melissa are charged with possession of marijuana and manufacturing of a controlled substance, among other charges.

LIMESTONE COUNTY, Ala. — A Limestone County corrections officer and his wife were arrested Friday and charged with multiple drug-related offenses, including the growing of psychotropic mushrooms. A release from the Alabama Department of Corrections identifies the coup as Chadwick Crabtree, warden of the Limestone County Correctional Facility, and his wife Melissa Crabtree.

The Crabtrees were arrested after a search warrant was executed at their home. ADOC, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) SWAT team, and the Limestone County Sheriff's Office combined efforts on the arrest.

They were taken into custody without incident, officials said.

Charges are listed as follows:

  • unlawful possession of marijuana II
  • unlawful possession of a controlled substance
  • manufacturing of a controlled substance
  • possession of drug paraphernalia

Court records show that manufacturing charge accuses him of growing psilocybin mushrooms, a hallucinogenic. The documents date the alleged offense as Sept. 1, 2022.

ADOC says a search warrant was also executed at Chadwick Crabtree's office at the Limestone County Corrections Facility. Results of that search are pending as the investigation continues.

He has been placed on mandatory leave without pay as that investigation plays out. Further action may be taken and more charges could be pending, ADOC said in their statement.

Bond for the Crabtrees has been set at $4,500 each. Court records did not show if Crabtree has an attorney to comment on his behalf.
