Two arrested after abduction, robbery, standoff that crossed counties

Two women were abducted in Brighton and taken to Guntersville, with the alleged captors, Jonathan Banks and Andre Burgin, arrested in Birmingham.

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. — Two men face robbery charges after a standoff in Birmingham. Police say suspects Jonathan Banks and Andre Burgin are responsible for an abduction in Brighton, taking the victims nearly an hour and a half away in their own van to Guntersville.

There, on Thursday, police said Burgin and Banks, along with a third suspect, attempted to hold up Griffins Jewelers, only to be chased off when the owner of the store opened fire on them. The two female abductees were found a short time later, still in the van, outside the Guntersville Lowe's.

Guntersville Police said in a case update Friday night that they contacted the FBI Birmingham Division after learning the two men were in the area.

Further investigation led Birmingham police to an apartment complex nearby Wenonah High School, where a standoff began.

Banks and Burgin were removed from the complex by tactical officers after an undisclosed amount of time, and turned over to Guntersville Police. They were booked early Saturday morning into the Marshall County Jail.

No word as of Saturday afternoon about the third suspect believed involved in the robbery attempt. Police say the investigation is ongoing.
