One man dead after HPD officer involved shooting

Huntsville Police say a 57 year old man pointed a handgun at officers as they responded to a 911 call Friday night. The man was shot, later died at HSV Hospital.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala — The following information was obtained from a media release sent by Huntsville Police Department Saturday, October 17 at 8:17 am from Lieutenant Jessie Sumlin, Huntsville Police Department Public Information Officer. 

Huntsville, Alabama (October 16th, 2020)  -  At approximately 10:30 p.m. on October 16th, Huntsville Police officers responded to a 911 call at 2111 Edinburgh Drive.  

Upon arrival, they were confronted by Alberto Rivas, 57 years of age, who pointed a handgun at them.  

One officer fired, striking Mr. Rivas.  Rivas was immediately taken to Huntsville Hospital where he later died.  As with all “officer involved shootings,” the officer involved will remain in an administrative role until the investigation is complete and has been reviewed by a Incident Review Board to ensure that there were no violations of policy.   

The Madison County District Attorneys Office will also review the investigation to ensure that there were no violations of law.  The investigation is currently ongoing.
