Lawmakers worried TikTok app poses national security risk

DECATUR, Ala. — Decatur City Schools issued a warning on Thursday that a popular TikTok trend could result in legal action.

Decatur City Schools says the goal of a new trend, the "Deviant Licks" TikTok challenge, is to either damage school property or steal items and post videos of it online in an attempt to go viral.

The district warns that if students are caught taking part in this trend, they will face discipline and potentially legal action. "We will not tolerate these actions and the complete disregard for student safety and a clean learning environment," the district wrote in a letter to parents.

"I understand this is a trendy fad and seems harmless, but we've already spent hours tracking down items that have been removed from the school as well as making maintenance repairs to our facilities. Vandalism, stealing, and acts of a disorderly nature are all against the Code of Student Conduct and can also be illegal in many situations. Our administrators are already tracking several of these incidents, and those involved will be dealt with accordingly," said Decatur City Schools Deputy Superintendent Dwight Satterfield.

"We ask that you have a conversation with your child and reinforce the severity of not following along, participating in or glamorizing this type of behavior," the district says in its letter.

A spokesperson with Cullman County Schools says:

Cullman County Schools wants to make you aware of a nationwide trend among students which stems from a new social media challenge called Deviant Licks. In these challenges, school property is damaged, and items may be stolen.

The students, hoping to gain social media notoriety, then post video of their actions online on platforms such as TikTok.

Cullman County Schools has a strong security camera presence. If students are caught participating, they will be disciplined and possibly face legal consequences. These actions will not be tolerated in Cullman County Schools. We ask that you have a conversation with your child and reinforce the importance of not participating, organizing, sharing, or glamorizing this behavior.
