Alabama House passes bill that would make it a felony to help someone vote absentee

Republicans in the Alabama House of Representatives on Thursday approved legislation that would make it a felony to help a voter fill out an absentee ballot.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Alabama House of Representatives passed a bill along party lines Thursday that would make it a felony to help someone fill out an absentee ballot under certain conditions.

HB209 passed 76-28 after a filibuster from Democrats.

The bill would make it a Class B Felony to pay anyone for assistance with an absentee ballot. The person or organization receiving money to help with the ballot would be guilty of a Class C Felony.

When there’s no one involved, the voter requesting assistance would be guilty of a Class C Felony and the person assisting would be guilty of a Class D Felony.
