Online car sales booming during COVID-19 pandemic

Car dealers are adapting to the new restrictions on being in public by upping their online approaches.

About 30% of customers say they're delaying vehicle purchases because of COVID-19.

About the same amount say they're delaying service and repairs on their cars.

While the automakers aren't making cars right now, dealerships still have plenty of inventory to sell. And so, to meet their customers where they are, they're trying to push online sales.

GM has a "Shop Click Drive" website where customers can look up trade in value as well as financing and essentially buy their car short of the final signature without ever going into the dealership and they've expanded that program.

Many car dealerships are even driving your new car to you, and in some cases they're driving to pick up your car for service.

"Being able to do all of the paperwork and selection and get the pricing, whether it's lease or buy and trade in online, I think is what the people are liking right now."

For dealerships that are still open, car sales are down right now and they expect that to continue into April.

But some good news for customers.

If you're planning to trade in your car, they say you can get top dollar for it right now because fewer people are doing it.
