Volunteer fire departments get wildland equipment funding

Volunteer fire departments in Alabama received over $1,200 in funding for wildland fire training and equipment.

TONEY, Alabama — The Toney Volunteer Fire Department recently received $1,283 in grant funding from the Alabama Forestry Commission.

This annual funding is appropriated by the Alabama Legislature and divided among all volunteer fire stations in the state. It helps provide wildland fire training and equipment to these departments.

Toney Fire & Rescue President, Heath Jones, says putting out wildland fires is much different than a structure fire and takes heavier equipment.

"We have two brush trucks that actually respond to any type of outside type fire event, so we have to specifically equip each one of those trucks with the equipment needed to perform our duties," said Jones.

Volunteer fire departments are going through a lot of PPE right now due to the pandemic. Jones says this kind of funding is crucial, especially during the pandemic.
