Wellness Wednesday | Drinking Water Week : The impact of water on oral health

It's time for a little weekly check in this Wellness Wednesday. In case you haven't heard, Governor Kay Ivey has declared May 5 -11 Drinking Water Week.

DECATUR, Ala. — It's time for a little weekly check in this Wellness Wednesday. In case you haven't heard, Governor Kay Ivey has declared May 5 -11 Drinking Water Week in Alabama. And, guess what? Proper hydration isn't the sole reason why.

For ADPH State Dental Director Tommy Johnson the whole purpose of drinking water week is raising awareness. "You know, drinking water is something that we very often take for granted. It's important on so many different levels. It is actually this week, but it's also an appreciation. It's an awareness and an appreciation of the people, our partners, that help us to promote safe drinking water."

Now, this week does obviously focus on health for hydration. But, hygiene needs are also at the top of the list. So from a dental standpoint, that includes oral health. "What we strive for is drinking water to have optimal fluoridation levels, which requires that they be adjusted in most areas. But the purpose of that is to help cut down on decay for children and adults."

Taking it a step further, Calhoun Community College's Dental Hygiene Program Director Sunnie McWhorter breaks down the two main types of drinking water. "So you have, of course, tap water and then bottled water. Those are the two main types. And honestly, I don't think people know this, that all bottled waters are not created equally. Some bottled waters are have a little sugar in them. Some of them are a little more acidic than other bottled waters."

So when it comes to selecting your drinking water, "I would encourage people to do as related to water is to drink tap water. And tap water is water that's going to have fluoride either occurring naturally or added to it. And it is the only water that is going to really protect your teeth as far as your oral health is concerned," said McWhorter.
