Road Conditions: Huntsville AL and surrounding areas | Winter Storm 2024 - The Latest

Dangerous cold continues into Friday, with more road closures and deteriorating road conditions.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Road conditions in Huntsville and surrounding area are improving, but many area are still icy and some roads remain closed. While temperatures warmed slightly and the sun came out on Friday, moisture on roads may still refreeze as temperatures drop later in the day and overnight.

Here are the latest updates on traffic conditions, public safety announcements, and major delays and closures as they come in.

January 19, 2024

ALDOT, 5 p.m. update:

The Alabama Department of Transportation cautions motorists to expect icy patches on north Alabama roadways tonight due to water refreezing on roads as temperatures drop. Motorists may encounter such hazards throughout the weekend.

Icy patches remain on many routes affected by this week’s winter storm, and melting snow and ice may run across road edges or travel lanes and refreeze on pavement that may otherwise appear clear. “Black ice” is so-called because it is difficult to see on pavement.

Motorists who must travel are advised to drive at reduced speeds and with great caution.

Madison Police, 4 p.m. update:

All roads are open and have been cleared, with the exception of Water Hill Road. Public Works cannot get equipment up the hill safely to clear the roadway. Water Hill is shut down until further notice.
