Huntsville Police will be looking for impaired drivers this July 4th weekend

Huntsville Police officers will saturate the city with patrols through the weekend.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — If you're planning to get on the road this weekend, make sure you're not under the influence. Huntsville Police Department's D.U.I. Task Force will be out looking for impaired drivers this weekend.

HPD urges you to put safety first during Fourth of July celebrations. Patrol officers and the D.U.I. Task Force will will conduct traffic safety checkpoints through the July 4 holiday weekend and week. If you are stopped at a traffic safety checkpoint, be prepared to present your driver's license, proof of insurance and vehicle registration to officers. 

According to HPD, the Task Force uses data from the North Alabama Highway Safety Office (NAHSO), which has identified more than 50 traffic crash hotspots across the city. Officers could conduct checkpoints at one or more of these locations.

Designated NAHSO hotspot locations include:

  • Jordan Lane/Sparkman Drive
  • Mastin Lake Road/Lodge Road
  • Mastin Lake Road/Pulaski Pike
  • Meridian St./Delaware Blvd.
  • Moores Mill Road/Stanwood Blvd.
  • Bankhead Parkway/Douglas Lane
  • Cecil Ashburn Drive/Old Big Cove Road
  • Church St./Pratt Ave.
  • Clinton Ave./Monroe St.
  • Sparkman Drive/Executive Drive
  • University Drive/Old Monrovia Road
  • University Drive/Research Park Blvd.
  • University Drive/Slaughter Road

Those who plan to drink alcohol should have a designated driver or use a ride-share app or taxi to travel. If you suspect a motorist of driving under the influence, please call HPD’s non-emergency line at 256-722-7100 and give the location, vehicle and driver description and the vehicle’s direction of travel. If there is immediate danger to the public, call 911.

Also, firing guns in a "celebratory manner" is illegal and can be deadly. And it's against the law to use, sell or possess fireworks within the city limits of Huntsville as they can cause injury or damage property. To report illegal fireworks, call HPD’s non-emergency number, 256-722-7100.
