Governor Kay Ivey signs DEI Bill into law, students and lawmakers react

Republican lawmakers across the country have pushed initiatives that would restrict diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, also known as DEI.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Senate Bill 129 or the DEI Bill has officially been signed into law by Governor Kay Ivey. For some, it is a major concern of how students will be educated.

Alabama State University NAACP Youth and College Division President Tyrin Moorer stressed that this could set the country back for years to come. "It's going to eventually become a time where children don't remember DEI programs. The way the restrooms was set up. I mean,  SB129, it even affects restrooms. College students are starting to wake up about this because they're seeing legislation that actually affects them. They're outraged about it. And some of them were completely perplexed. Small moves, have been being made for a long time for things like this to happen. This is why we have to have voter education. We have to put lawmakers in place who work for the common good and not only those lawmakers. We have to make sure that our courts are the way they need to be."

Republican lawmakers across the country have pushed initiatives that would restrict diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, also known as DEI. The Alabama Legislation would prohibit Universities, K-12 school systems and state agencies from sponsoring DEI programs, defined under the bill as classes, training, programs and events where attendance is based on a person's race, sex, gender identity, ethnicity, national origin or sexual orientation.

SB129 will go in to effect in October, and Alabama Republican Party Chairman John Wahl issued the following statement in support of Alabama lawmakers following the DEI ban (sb129) becoming law. Government is charged with ensuring responsible use of taxpayer dollars. SB129 does exactly that, while pushing back on the woke agenda. Governor Kay Ivey, bill sponsor Senator Will Barfoot, and members of the Alabama Legislature stand united in upholding the principles that matter most to the people of Alabama. Their work reinforces Alabama's reputation as a beacon of family values. I thank them for their unwavering dedication, service, and leadership. It's time we stop indoctrinating children with a social agenda and let parents decide what their families believe concerning divisive concepts.
