Free tax prep services available for North Alabama families

Impact America is offering free drop-off and virtual tax preparation options through their SaveFirst Program.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala — Tax season is right around the corner, and the non-profit Impact America is making sure people in need have access to free online tax preparation.

This year, they are allowing both drop-off and virtual options through their SaveFirst Program. The free service is available to households making up to $57,000 a year.

Those who want to use the virtual service just have to answer a few questions, upload photos of their tax forms, and IRS-certified volunteers will help to prepare their tax return.

People who want to drop off their forms will need to schedule a 20 minute low-contact appointment for virtual preparation.

Impact America National Program Director, Channing Bethke, said, "We're basically using that 20 minute appointment time to intake tax documents from tax payers to scan copies of all of their forms, to answers any questions they may have, and to ask them about their tax situation."

With the pandemic financially impacting countless families, Impact America says it's more important than ever that hardworking families receive the greatest tax refund possible.

The 2021 tax filing season starts on Friday, February 12, but Impact America can start preparing returns now. The non-profit is encouraging people to go ahead and make an appointment.
