Developments, housing, and future plans for Decatur

Growth in Decatur means changes to developments and housing.

DECATUR, Ala. — As the seasons change, so does the housing market. The housing market also changes when cities grow and develop.

In the city of Decatur, there has been a shift in the market that could call for even more growth.

Jeff Brown, Decatur Chamber of Commerce Board Chairmen, explains,
"We've really had no new residential growth or are very, very slight for years and so it's just a matter where you know, we need more houses. Riverfront development is happening. So you can have a home and be on the river. You know, where has there been any of that for several years."

Decatur Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Crystal Brown adds that developers have discovered that Decatur is a great place to be, where you can build affordably and have a minimal commute to other areas.

This desire to live in Decatur hasn't always been so strong. But now, houses are selling like hot cakes in the city, so much so that they are having trouble fitting everyone in.

Jeff Brown says, "Our market for houses, the turnover rate is just you know, amazing houses are under contract before they ever hit the market. And that's just not how Decatur has ever been. We've got people that want to live in Decatur and they can't find a place to live. They want a house at a price point they want a house with amenities. And so some of these subdivisions offer that."

Although it may be hard to find a home to move into today in Decatur, if you wait, you could find yourself calling it home after more homes are built there. The Chamber leaders agree that Decatur is the place to be.

Crystal Brown says, "Living indicator is an opportunity to have additional acreage, additional home size and you know, certainly the cost of living is very affordable."
