Black History Month celebrations happening across the Tennessee Valley

Several events are honoring and commemorating Black History Month throughout February.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Several events are holding celebrations this February in honor of Black History Month. We have a list below of some that are taking place across the Tennessee Valley. 

The City of Huntsville's Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion is hosting a Black History Month community event -  This event will feature acclaimed writer, hip-hop critic and 2024 Grammy nominee Kevin Powell. The event is Thursday, Feb. 29, from 6 - 8 p.m. at the Bob Harrison Wellness and Advocacy Center. Tickets are free, but attendance is limited to 200 people.

African Americans in Education and the Arts at Burrit on the Mountain - Happening on February 10 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. includes crafts, a scavenger hunt and a look at the life of Booker T. Washington.

UAH Constellation Concert Series presents Afro-Creole Songs & Negro Spirituals - Happening on February 15 starting at 7:30 p.m. UAH Constellation Concert Series presents Songs of Love, Sorrow, Hope, & Healing, a Black History Month collaboration. Tickets start at $10. 

UAH luncheon and artistic showcase events - Celebrate Black History Month with three events reflecting African Americans and the Arts. The programs are set for Thursday, February 15.

The Art of Textured - NWSCC Salon and Spa is hosting a workshop in honor of Black History Month to educate haircare and styling. It all starts February 20. For more details, visit here.  

Black History Month Keynote: Dr. Quentin Lee - Northeast Alabama Community College is hosting Dr. Lee on Tuesday, February 13, in the Music Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

Black in the South Film Series -  The Downtown Huntsville Public Library will showcase a series of films that illuminate the Black experience in the Southern United States through cinema. The screenings are scheduled for Mondays on February 12, 19, and 26, starting at 5:30 p.m.

Rocket City Civil Rights Driving Tour - See sites like the Fifth Avenue School, the first public school in the state of Alabama to integrate, Oakwood University. For more information, visit here.

Honoring Black History Month: Movie Night and Discussion - Rocket City Pride is bringing the third annual event on February 25 at 5 p.m. For more information, visit here.

Black History Is Church History Event -  From the ancient roots to contemporary voices, discover inspiring stories and impactful contributions at this free event. Happening on February 24 from 12 - 4 p.m.

Scottsboro Boys Exhibit - The exhibit tells the story of the arrests, trials, and the case’s global impact. This February, the museum brings its travel exhibition to Huntsville-Madison County Library Downtown Branch. For more information, visit here.

UNA hosts Black History Month Speaker: Salaam Green - Happening on Thursday, February 22 at 11 a.m. in the Wesleyan Auditorium. Full list of UNA Black History Month events can be found here.

Black History Celebration - Annual Black History Month Celebration Sunday, February 11th at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Bobby Hampton. For more information, visit here.

CES Black History Night - Challenger Elementary School is presenting a Black History Month program on February 29 from 6 - 8 p.m. This special event will feature student performances, wax museum presentations, and vendors like food trucks.

Snead State Presents Black History Month Concert - Happening this Friday, February 16, at the Boaz campus. The performances will begin at 7 p.m. in Fielder Auditorium and the community is invited to attend. For more information, visit here.
