Birmingham ends curfew, extends mask order

The Birmingham City Council voted to end the 10:00 p.m to 5:00 a.m public curfew, but face covering must be work until at least May 22.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A few changes are coming to BIrmingham, but probably not some that people were hoping for.

Birmingham had been under a public safety curfew from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. as part of the city's "Shelter-in-Place" order. That curfew was ended today by the city council.

The city is following the state's guidelines for business reopening for retailers, restaurants, gyms, and close-contact businesses like barbers and salons, as well as the guidelines for group gatherings, which may be of any size as long as a 6-foot distance can be maintained between people not living in the same household.

The city council did agree to extend the face-covering portion of the ordinance until May 22. Under this rule, anyone "over the age of two (2) years and who can medically tolerate doing so when in public places within the City of Birmingham." This includes, "employees or customers or clients of businesses within the City." There are exceptions for certain activities like solo exercise or when wearing a mask would make work hazardous. In these situations, social distancing is strongly encouraged.
