Alabama bill would make it illegal to hold phone while driving

If passed, drivers caught using electronic devices would be fined $100 the first time.

Alabama lawmakers want to make it illegal for drivers to hold their cell phones while driving.

It is already illegal to text and drive. This new bill would fine people holding any electronic device when behind the wheel. That includes making phone calls and using navigation apps.

People would still be allowed to use steering wheel controls and other hands free ways to make calls or get directions.

Many people in Huntsville think the bill is a good idea.

Huntsville resident Destynd Muhamad said, "Using phones nowadays, while texting and driving is really dangerous. Not only can it affect your life, but it could affect other lives around you."

"Texting and driving and looking on Instagram and stuff is very distracting and gets people in trouble at red lights or just anything in general and really ramps up on the wrecks," said Hannah Holcomb, a Huntsville resident.

If passed, drivers caught using electronic devices would be fined $100 the first time, $200 for the second violation, and $300 for every other violation.
