ATHENS, Ala. — This week's edition of Top Teacher, we want to introduce you to a teacher who's all about civics on Super Tuesday. She has a passion for patriotism! The students in her class say she makes learning fun and even rewarding! Meet this week's top Teacher Civics Teacher Sherry McEwen from Athens Middle School!
“She's a patriot. She stands with everybody in America. “Go America!,” said her 7th Grade Student.
It’s no surprise she’s taught civics for several years. “Twenty,” said Sherry McEwen.
McEwen has taught 7th graders for even longer. “This is going to be ending my 27th year. The kids keep me young and it's never the same day. It's never the same year, It's never the same job. It's just, it's fulfilling and I just love them,” said McEwen.
They love her too, just ask her student, Kain Lagunas. “She helps us understand more things through like her jokes. So the fun activities that she does is like tic-tac-toe like word puzzles.”
Lagunas also thinks he’s excelling in civics. “I have a pretty good grade in her class, so I think I'm pretty smart in her class. This is my first year here since I moved from California, so it's my first semester having her.”
If Kain wasn’t enough, Jaylen enjoys her McEwen’s class too. “She makes learning come with an award. “She does everything for us, and she really just, she's dedicated to her job."” said Jaylen.
Also, for McEwen she knew being a teacher was her calling. “Don't want to teach anything else, any other grade level. You know, they're still at an age where they want to. They want you to like them. And if they like you, they'll move mountains for you.”
“This is the job I was meant to do, So I knew I wanted to be a teacher since I was a little girl.”
