Madison City Schools asking for feedback on middle school rezoning plan

MADISON, Alabama — Madison City Schools is seeking feedback on its middle school rezoning plan with Journey Middle School set to open in August 2022.

The new middle school will open with approximately 900 students. The district said with the opening of Journey Middle School, it will need to rezone students for the 2022-23 school year.

"This rezone is based on all current and new developments approved by the City of Madison and the Town of Triana," the district said in a note to parents. "As with our proposed elementary rezone, we always strive to keep our schools representative of our diverse community."

Under the new rezoning plan, the district provided the following statistics for its middle schools:

  • Discovery
    • Total capacity: 1400
    • Projected rezoned enrollment: 932
    • Projected rezoned povert percentage: 20%
    • Projected rezoned capacity percentage: 67%
  • Journey
    • Total capacity: 1200
    • Projected rezoned enrollment: 883
    • Projected rezoned povert percentage: 22%
    • Projected rezoned capacity percentage: 74%
  • Liberty
    • Total capacity: 1400
    • Projected rezoned enrollment: 865
    • Projected rezoned povert percentage: 19%
    • Projected rezoned capacity percentage: 62%
