Florence police arrest man for attempted murder after hitting pedestrian with car

According to Florence police, the incident happened around 7 p.m. on January 31 near Hough Road.

FLORENCE, Ala. — A man from Iron City, Tenn. was arrested Wednesday night following an incident outside a Florence, Ala. Walmart store. Police say 73-year-old Larry Franklin Palmer hit a man in the store parking lot with his vehicle, and then confronted him armed with a handgun.

Investigators say the initial call for assistance came around 7 p.m. at the Walmart near Hough Rd. Witnesses reported seeing a 2016 GMC Sierra driven by Palmer circling the parking lot slowly before accelerating and hitting the victim, a 68-year-old Rogersville man.

Witnesses said Palmer then exited the vehicle with a revolver. Police say the victim ran into the store to seek help.

About a half an hour later, police responded to a nearby hospital, where staff said a firearm had been found in the possession of a patient who had recently checked in. Upon arrival, the gun was secured, and it was revealed that the patient was Palmer.

The victim received medical attention for non-life-threatening injuries and was released. During the investigation, police found out about an ongoing legal dispute between Palmer and the victim in Tennessee.

Upon release from the hospital, Palmer was arrested on charges of attempted murder and tampering with a witness. Currently held in the Lauderdale County Detention Center, Palmer faces a bond of $60,300.
