School may be out, but hunger never goes away

People in the Valley came together to feed those in need. They specifically served kids who could be missing out on meals because they rely on meals from school.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — "Whoever walks up, we're not going to judge them. They might have a nicer car than you. They might look better, whatever, doesn't matter - if people are coming to get food, they're going to get food," said Alabama Area Director of the nonprofit organization, One Generation Away, Daelyn Houser. "It doesn't matter, those biases, those glasses come off. We're serving our neighbors, we're serving Huntsville."

That's exactly what people did today. They served Huntsville by feeding members of the community, specifically kids who are currently out of school on summer break.

"Most of these guys would not eat anything today..." said Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop 400,  Akaose Ibeaji.

Food was distributed outside of a building used as a meeting place for a local boy scouts troop... Troop 400.

"One of the key issues that we're facing in the community is food insecurity, especially for our children who are not in school. So, having a program that comes out to actually provide food for the kids during the summer when they are not able to get food at schools is critical," said Ibeaji.

During the summer months, hundreds of children are assisted with meals while parents are at work. Oftentimes these meals are passed out during the week - leaving room for hunger on the weekends.

"You know, during the summer it's hard to come by, they don't get the groceries on the weekends and stuff, and there are programs that provide them during the week but we wanted to fill the gap for the weekend and bring that food," said Houser.

Food choices are aimed towards children and for more than just how it tastes but for nutritional value as well.

"We try and focus our food around kid-friendly meals, meals that the family can do together, but also our nutritional that, you know like mac & cheese, pasta, something easy for kids to be able to receive the nutrients that they need on a basic day to day basis," said Houser.
