Renew AL license with a few clicks: Avoid health risks

Even something like a trip to the DMV can seem like you’re putting yourself at risk to come in contact with coronavirus. In Alabama, an online option might be best.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. —

Alabama State Troopers are urging people to consider using their online platform to renew their licenses. It could save you time, and potentially, a lot more.

We met with Trooper Derek Campbell,  Huntsville PIO of the Alabama State Troopers. He says, “You’re not risking coming into the office and getting others sick or even getting sick from somebody else that’s in the office.”

Campbell tells us their online license renewal site is more important now than ever. You can renew an already existing Alabama drivers license with just a few clicks. You cannot switch an out-of-state license for an Alabama license online.

Campbell adds, “With everything that’s going on with the coronavirus, it’s limiting your contact with the public. There are people out there who are sick who probably don’t know it.”

It’s around the time that tens of thousands will be on the roads for spring break. Troopers say, they’ll be ready. Derek Campbell adds, “We’re gonna increase our presence in those areas, and look for aggressive diving, distracted driving and even drivers who are impaired.”

And drivers, especially young ones, need to have all their documentation, stay alert, and drive safely. Derek Campbell tells our reporter, “Obey the speed limit. Put on your seat belt. Put down your cell phone and limit the distractions in your vehicle.”

If you renew your license online, you’ll be given a valid, virtual one to use-- in case you’re stopped on the road.

Whether you’re turning 21 and need a horizontal license, or your license is simply expired, now is the time to do it online before it’s too late.

You can avoid the lines in the license offices and the health risks.

Campbell says, “It’s gonna help us keep everybody separated and especially people who are sick. We don’t want to continue to spread any kind of sickness throughout the community.”

The STAR ID is another thing that’s on people’s minds. The U.S. government says you need to have yours before October 1st to get on any flight or to get on military bases like Redstone Arsenal.

You can’t get that STAR ID using the ALEA site just yet.

You still have to come in to your local license office. But, troopers say, now is the time. Before the last minute scramble happens.
