SKYLINE, Ala. — Alabama Law Enforcement Agency officials confirmed the death of a man they said engaged a Skyline police officer in gunfire during an incident Thursday night.

It happened just before 5:30 p.m. as an officer responded to a service call along County Road 143 in Jackson County.

ALEA says the officer was confronted by a man, later identified as 41-year-old Charles David Boyles Jr., who fired at the officer. The officer fired back, and Boyles was struck, dying at the scene.

The officer received minor injuries and was treated at Highlands Medical Center in Scottsboro and released.

Once the investigation is complete, ALEA says the findings will be turned over to the Jackson County District Attorney's Office.
