Stay Safe This Spring: ALEA promotes responsible practices for drivers

ALEA shares seven tips, aiming to keep students and families safe during end of school year festivities.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — As the end of school year celebrations approach, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is announcing its fourth consecutive 'Think Smart Before You Start' spring safety campaign. With spring break, prom, and graduation festivities on the horizon, ALEA urges students and their families to prioritize safety during these occasions.

ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor said, “As law enforcement, we have a responsibility to ensure our roadways and communities are safe. This is especially true during the spring season when many teens are obtaining their license and embarking on their first significant journey behind the wheel. We recognize the importance of instilling responsible driving behaviors from the start and encourage parents to join us in reinforcing safety by having serious discussions with their children, as well as any young or inexperienced drivers they mentor.”

Colonel Jonathan Archer, Director of ALEA's Department of Public Safety (DPS), highlights the tragic consequences of inexperienced driving and the need for comprehensive safety education. Archer stresses the importance of responsible behavior both on the roads and waterways, urging courtesy and adherence to safety protocols.

“We see the same issues as it relates to those planning to enjoy the state’s waterways as the temperature continues to warm up. To ensure everyone has a smooth sail, let's prioritize courtesy! Be mindful of new boaters, wear your life jackets (PFDs), and if enjoying drinks, designate a sober captain. We want everyone to have a safe time enjoying Alabama’s waterways,” said Archer.

Alongside promoting safe driving practices, ALEA's Marine Patrol Division provides boating courses to educate individuals on navigating water bodies safely. While these courses are free to the public, there is a some fees for vessel endorsements, including $5 for the application and a $36.25 issuance fee for the updated license.

To further raise awareness, ALEA Troopers conduct mock crash events at schools statewide, educating students about the dangers of impaired and reckless driving.

"One of the many goals of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is to prevent crashes in order to save lives. We must do more to keep our teens and young adults safe,” said, Secretary Taylor. “We ask everyone to join us in prioritizing safety and think smart before you start.”

As part of the campaign, ALEA provides seven spring safety tips:

  1. Review safety laws and discuss plans with teens.
  2. Always buckle up, regardless of trip length.
  3. Avoid distractions, especially cell phone use while driving.
  4. Adhere to traffic laws, including speed limits and lane usage.
  5. Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  6. Have open conversations about the consequences of decisions.
  7. Monitor teen activities around alcohol and provide alternative transportation options.
