Huntsville Fire and Rescue applications open

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Huntsville Fire & Rescue (HFR) is offering an opportunity to make a difference through a career in firefighting. Applications are now open for people wanting to join the team. Firefighters play a different roles beyond combating fires, including prevention and providing emergency lifesaving and rescue services. Positions available include Hazmat Team, Heavy Rescue Team, Fire Prevention and Code Enforcement, Honor Guard/Pipes & Drums, and the Training Division. There are also pathways to leadership roles within the department.

“A reliable, qualified fire department is essential to the City’s health and safety,” Mayor Tommy Battle said. “When the call comes in, our residents and businesses need and deserve nothing less than the very best to respond. I’m excited to see the next group of candidates step up to the challenge.”

Eligibility requirements include no felony convictions, being at least 18 years old, and having a high school diploma or GED. Cadets start with an annual salary of $53,726, which increases to $59,280 upon completion of training and transition to full-time firefighters. Additionally, firefighters are eligible for a 5% physical fitness incentive after completing training and can expect a step pay increase every 12 months.

“This is not just a job, it’s a calling,” Huntsville Fire Chief Howard “Mac” McFarlen said. “When we are looking to hire individuals for HFR, we are looking for candidates eager to be part of a team and serve the people of Huntsville who may be facing one of the worst days of their lives.”
