HPD: Standoff at Westlake Apartments off Sparkman Dr. ends, suspect in custody

Police reportedly arrived to a call about a domestic violence incident. The suspect is now in custody.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — UPDATE: 5:55pm: Officials say that the 23-year-old man who had barricaded himself in an apartment in the Westlake Apartments complex on Sparkman Drive is now in custody. The two children who were in the home with him are safe.

Police would like to thank Madison County Sheriff Kevin Turner and deputies with their assistance in the case.

UPDATE: 5:40pm Police spoke to the media and said they are still communicating and negotiating with the man in the apartment.

Several units with Huntsville Police Department's SWAT team are at the scene of a reported standoff. The incident is taking place at the Westlake Apartments, located in the 1900 block of Sparkman Dr. NW.

Police were reportedly responding to a domestic violence complaint earlier Thursday afternoon. Officials say one person described as the victim in the incident has been able to vacate the apartment, but one person has barricaded themselves inside the apartment and refuses to come out. Police said they are in "active negotiations" with the person.

It is not currently known if there is anyone else inside the apartment with the reported suspect.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area for the time being, as there is still a heavy police presence at the complex, including units from the Madison County Sheriff's Office.
