In the classroom of Mrs. Kayla Mitchell at Wills Valley Elementary School in Fort Payne, the little victories are always something to celebrate.
“We scream, and dance, and pat each other on the back, and kiss your brain,” smiles Mrs. Kayla Mitchell, the Valley’s Top Teacher.
Her kindergartners are always excited to come to class because they say their teacher is kind and makes them smile.
“She’s nice,” says Olivia Jane Morgan, a kindergarten student.
“We do fun things,” adds Riley Chapman, a fellow kindergartner.
Mrs. Mitchell taught special education for half of her career and now is helping kids grow as a kindergarten teacher. She would never tell you herself, but she does a lot for her kids outside of the classroom, even doing things like buying them clothes when they are in need.
“They learn more when they know that they are loved and they are taken care of,” shares Mrs. Mitchell. “And if I can help with all of it, that’s what I am going to do.”
And her students are not the only people she shows extra care towards, she is always looking out for others.
“It gives me pleasure to make others smile, even if it’s teachers I don’t work with,” says Mrs. Mitchell. “If they are having a bad day, I try to do something to make them smile.”
Mrs. Mitchell does a lot of good, and she also encourages her kids to do their best.
“She has something that we get points, and on Friday we get to go to the treasure box,” smiles Riley Chapman.
Mrs. Mitchell says her students truly become her own kids, and she always sheds some tears at the end of the school year because of just how much she cares about them.
“I always tell them I love them and I give them a hug at the end of the day and the beginning of the day. They know they can come talk to me if they need to too.”
