Good evening Tennessee Valley and a very happy Sunday! Under mostly sunny skies temperatures finally warmed up this afternoon. Officially at HSV we saw a high of 57 degrees. We’ve got one more warm day to start the new workweek. It’ll still be chilly in the morning, so you’ll want to dress in layers. I expect many will begin the day in the low to mid-30s but finish the day in the mid and upper 50s.
Everything changes on Tuesday where we could see some decent snow in the Tennessee Valley. A strong Arctic cold front will come through Monday night. This chance for winter weather comes because of an area of low pressure still sitting over the Dakotas. With that low is an associated cold front. The cold front will be the forcing mechanism, and southerly flow on Monday which is also bringing the warmer air will also bring in the moisture needed.
This will first bring a little bit of light rain, but that light rain will quickly transition over to snow west to east very early Tuesday morning. I expect some across NW Alabama could begin to see snow as early as 12 AM Tuesday before it moves into the I-65 corridor between 1 AM and 3 AM Tuesday. Snow will begin to come to an end across NW Alabama around 4 AM before ending across the entire Tennessee Valley around 10 AM. From there the sunshine should make a return.
The main impacts from this round of winter weather will be dangerous travel conditions both Tuesday and Wednesday morning. With the snow Tuesday morning the NWS has gone ahead and issued a WINTER STORM WATCH for the entire Tennessee Valley beginning at 12 AM Tuesday and ending at 12 PM Tuesday. The complications on Wednesday will result from the fact that temperatures will not be above freezing on Tuesday and will fall into the teens and 20s Tuesday night. This means that roadways will refreeze making for icy conditions during the Wednesday morning commute.
As far as accumulations are concerned, confidence is beginning to grow. It looks like the entire Tennessee Valley will see at least 1.5 inches. Some will see more on the order of 2-2.5 inches. On the higher end 3 inches cannot be ruled out.
