Hundreds of runners made their way out to the annual Rocket City Marathon.  This race has a lasting legacy in Huntsville.

Runners have been making their way through historic Huntsville– from the Botanical Gardens, to the Space and Rocket center, and now Big Spring Park — for over 40 years now. Locals who ran could qualify for the Boston Marathon.

The Rocket City Marathon is put on by the Huntsville Track Club. The race brought runners from all over the country to Huntsville.

We spoke with Billy Nolis, from Tallahassee, Florida. He says, “This was my 90th marathon and my second marathon in Alabama, and it was terrific.” He adds the the scenery and staff organization made the this marathon one that will rank near the top of his list.

Ryan Gregory from Denver, Colorado tells us this marathon was one he’s going to remember. Gregory says, “I’m doing a race in every state, so this was my Alabama race. It was a good route! And you go off on a trail for a little bit so that was kind of a nice variety there too. It was a good run.”

Doug Clark from Salt Lake City, Utah, tells us this was his 40th marathon and just checked his 27th state off of his list. Clark says, “ I’m doing all 50 states. And so the timing for this one was right. You know, you go and you dream– you kind of go through the list of marathons– and this has been on my list for probably a couple years. And I thought ‘Alright, let’s go do it’.

This year’s race had a Half Marathon, Kids Marathon– and for the first time, a Marathon Relay. Relay participants could get into teams of up to 5, and run sections of the race to help raise money for their favorite non-profits.
