Neighbors concerned about shooting range being built in neighborhood

Construction for a shooting range in a neighborhood is going on in New Hope and neighbors are concerned.

Neighbors say the noise and guns being shot so close to their homes is what worries them most, but according to the shooting range website it’s set to open in the fall.

Construction for the range on Hobbs Island Road is across the street from several houses and down the road from others.

“The nearest house is probably within 50 yards maybe,” said one man. “Probably from here to there you’re probably looking at 125. And you’re having people shooting AR’s and everything out there the way their post says on Facebook.”

Neighbors are worried about the sound and the guns making it.

“You’re gonna nonstop hear guns going off all through the day,” the man continued.

“Yeah the noise and I’m more worried about say, there’s hunters that go back there all the time,” said another man. “A mishap or whatever, goes off in the woods. Also the road right here. A ricochet could hit that road any time.”

According to the Hobbs Island Shooting Range website the range will be open by the end of September. The website shows a list of rules and safety regulations.

District 3 Commissioner Craig Hill says the range owner has met with him to make sure he’s following the rules.

“When they submitted their plan for engineering and all of it was sufficient,” Hill said.

Hill’s also heard from a number of neighbors against the business. There, he says his hands are tied.

“Being in unincorporated Madison County we don’t have the authority by law to zone,” Hill said. “So without that authority the business will move forward I assume.”

The range’s website says it will be a members-only range.

WZDX News didn’t hear back after multiple attempts to reach the shooting range owner.

The Madison County Commission is working on a noise ordinance for the county. It will regulate the decibel level and times of day there can be noise.
