The Madison County Sheriff’s Office held a press conference Thursday afternoon, Nov. 7, on their investigation into the Madison Police officer-involved shooting that killed Dana Fletcher on Oct. 27.

During the press conference, Sheriff Kevin Turner announced that the Madison County Sheriff’s Office had concluded its portion of the officer-involved shooting investigation and would now be turning the evidence gathered during their investigation to the Madison County District Attorney’s Office.

In a statement released by the Sheriff’s Office, authorities said that while all evidence has been processed, all body cam footage and business videos reviewed, and all witnesses interviewed, there is still evidence that must be analyzed and processed by the State Department of Forensic Science. They also said that in order to protect the integrity of the investigative process, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office will not publicly release any evidence related to the case.

Following the press conference, the City of Madison released a statement:

The City of Madison would like to thank the Madison County Sheriff’s Office for their tireless work in conducting a thorough investigation of the events on October 27th. The City will await the results of the Madison County District Attorney’s review and stands ready to support them with any additional information they may need. Once the District Attorney has concluded its review, the City will provide a statement to our community.”

On Sunday October 27th, Madison Police were dispatched to a suspicious person call in front of the Planet Fitness on Hwy. 72 W. in Madison. The call ended in an officer-involved shooting and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office was requested to investigate.

A citizen called 911 at 4:40pm. saying there was a red and white van in front of Planet Fitness and the occupants of the van had been inside the gym taking pictures and asking inappropriate questions.

The first officer arrived three minutes after the call was made and approached the passenger side of the van, where 39-year-old Dana Fletcher was sitting with the door open. Mr. Fletcher and the female in the driver’s seat were uncooperative with the officer, and the officer saw Mr. Fletcher reach between the seats toward a gun. Other officers arrived a short time later and a struggle ensued with Mr. Fletcher in an attempt to get him out of the van and disarmed. Officers were able to safely remove the uncooperative female and an 8-year-old child from the van, but Mr. Fletcher refused. A police K9 was used in an attempt to disarm Mr. Fletcher and another officer used a less-than-lethal taser, but they were not successful. Mr. Fletcher stepped from the van, pointed the gun at an officer, and two officers fired their weapon. Officers attempted first-aid, but Mr. Fletcher was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers recovered the firearm from Mr. Fletcher’s hand after the shooting.

As part of their normal procedure, Madison Police Department requested an outside agency, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, to respond and investigate. The investigators processed all evidence at the scene, reviewed all body cam and business videos, and have interviewed all witnesses as part of the investigative process. The Sheriff’s Office has concluded its portion of the investigation and turned all available evidence and materials over to the District Attorney’s Office for further investigation.

However, there is still evidence that must be analyzed and processed by the State Department of Forensic Science. To protect the integrity of the investigative process, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office will not publicly release any evidence related to the case. We are confident the District Attorney’s Office will review the case and evidence in its entirety in the same manner they review all cases in order to reach an accurate finding.
