Alabama’s 2020 primary election is coming up on March 3. If you plan to register to vote, time is running out.
Your deadline depends on how you plan to register. All of this information comes directly from the Alabama Secretary of State’s Office.
If you’re hand-delivering your voter registration form to your local Registrar’s Office, it needs to be there by Friday, February 14.
If you’re mailing it in, it needs to be postmarked by Saturday, February 15. A link to the Mail-In Voter Registration Form is here. This form includes mailing addresses for local Board of Registrars Offices.
Monday, February 17 is the last day for online voter registration.
For any election, the last day to register to vote or update your voter registration is the 15th day prior to the election.
Alabama also has a form for registered voters who are victims of domestic violence or or guardians of minor victims of domestic violence. This form allows those voters to have their residential and mailing addresses omitted from publicly available lists of registered voters.
Registering to vote is not the end of the process. According to the Secretary of State’s website, once your application has been processed by your local Board of Registrars, you should receive an acknowledgement from the Registrars indicating the status of your application, usually a voter identification card confirming that you are registered to vote. However, if your application was incomplete, you may receive a letter requesting additional information to complete your application.
Whether you are newly registered or a long-time voter, you can check your status and polling location on the Polling Place and Registration Status page.
And before you vote, make sure you have the required ID.
Want to cast an absentee vote? You’ll need to get a special ballot and pay attention to deadlines. There are strict guidelines for absentee voting, so make sure you are eligible.
