In keeping with its themed “Madison Depot 1869” for the city’s 150th birthday, the city is reenacting its historic “chicken toss” at the Madison Business Expo & Kids Day on Saturday, July 27.
Luckily for attendees, this won’t be as messy as the original spectacle from the 1930s. According to the Madison Chamber, Humphreys-Hughes Drug Store would release chickens from the top of the building to the crowd below. People tried to catch the birds and the merchandise coupons attached to their legs!
This year, at noon on Saturday, three dozen rubber chickens with gift cards attached to their legs will be tossed from high up in the Madison Fire Department’ bucket truck. Family fun, no feathers.
Other activities include face painting, balloon animals, bounce house, a dunk tank, food trucks, and more than 60 booths representing various local businesses. The event is free and runs from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Hogan Family YMCA, 130 Park Square Lane in Madison.
