The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is reminding boaters to be safe when heading out on the water this weekend.
ALEA says 28 people have died so far this year in Alabama in boating accidents. They say a leading cause is alcohol.
ALEA Senior Trooper, Jeff Reaves, said, “A lot of times, people don’t understand that a boat is no different than a car. I mean, a car is a piece of heavy machinery and so is a boat.”
State troopers are encouraging people to have a sober driver. Boaters should also follow basic rules like wearing life jackets, having a working fire extinguisher, and having the kill switch attached to the driver at all times.
