There’s usually only paper in your mailbox, but on Saturday you’re asked to put canned food in there too.
For the Stamp Out Hunger food drive your mailman brings nonperishable food items to the Food Bank of North Alabama. The executive director there said they’ve gotten up to 100 thousand pounds of food before.
She told WZDX News the drive really helps them restock after the lull of canned goods going into the summer.
“Right now we only have about 19 cases of cans that are available for the 250 groups that we work with so we really need to restock our supplies,” said Shirley Schofield, executive director of the Food Bank of North Alabama. “And this is one of the easiest ways for people to donate because they can just take canned goods, nonperishable items, and put them out at their mailbox and it goes to people who need it.”
This is a national campaign so it doesn’t matter where you live, you can still take part.
