Penny Marshall, best known as “Laverne” of Laverne & Shirley, passes away at 75

Penny Marshall, who made her place in TV history as “Laverne” of Laverne & Shirley before becoming a top Hollywood director, has passed away at 75.

Marshall died from complications from diabetes, her publicist told the New York Daily News.

Although she may be best known as Laverne DeFazio on Laverne & Shirley, which aired from 1976-83, and the iconic L that seemed to be on every sweater her character wore, Penny Marshall was the director behind box office favorites like Jumpin’ Jack Flash, Big, A League of Their Own,  Renaissance Man, The Preacher’s Wife, Riding in Cars with Boys, and Awakenings.

She was also a serious Los Angeles Lakers fans and a courtside regular at their games.
