This Friday, June 7, 2019, join thousands of athletes, coaches and families from across Alabama and neighboring states to celebrate the opening of the 37th annual Alabama State Games, Alabama’s largest multi-sport Olympic-style event, hosted by the City of Huntsville, Madison County, and the Huntsville/Madison County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.
Following in true Olympic fashion, the Alabama State Games takes pride in the Opening Ceremony, which features Olympic traditions such as the Parade of Athletes, the running of the Olympic Torch, and lighting of the Olympic Flame. The Opening Ceremony showcases the rich history of the city of Huntsville and Madison county, with a special presentation honoring the history of the great state of Alabama as we celebrate our Bicentennial, as well as the 50th anniversary of the Launch and Landing on the Moon.
The Opening Ceremony is televised LIVE statewide on Alabama Public Television and includes an exciting mix of hi-tech lasers and pyrotechnics, featuring outstanding individuals from the state and surrounding community. Come help us celebrate Alabama’s athletes, the history of the Space Program, and the Bicentennial and future of the great State of Alabama!
The excitement begins at 3:00 pm with Athlete Registration and t-shirt pickup at the Von Braun center’s South Hall Ballrooms. Also at 3:00 pm, the State Games FanFair begins in South Hall 2, showcasing vendors from the surrounding area, including NASA and the U.S. Space & Rocket Center!
At 5:00 Friday evening, preceding the Opening Ceremony, the State Farm Leadership Summit begins in South Hall 2, featuring five-time American Ninja Warrior participant, and motivational speaker, Maggi Thorne!
This is a special time for athletes, coaches, parents, spectators and volunteers to learn the importance of academic excellence, good citizenship, responsibility, leadership, and the concept of community, while learning from an outstanding example! The LIVE televised Opening Ceremony will run for 1 hour and will begin in the Propst arena at 7:00 pm, with doors open at 5:30.
The Opening Ceremony will set the stage for a weekend of activity with sport venues spread throughout Huntsville, Madison County, Madison, and Decatur. Nearly 30 sports will be played at almost 40 different venues.
Registration is still open for several sports, and several offer on-site registration this weekend.
The following sports have online registration still open: June 4: Karate: June 5: Ninja Challenge, Taekwondo, Youth Triathlon; June 6: Disc Golf, Diving, 5K, Track and Field June 7: Wrestling; Sports with on-site registration available: 5K, Bowling, Disc Golf, Karate, Mountain Biking, Shooting Sports, Table Tennis.
