The Colbert County Sheriff’s Office reports that another recent phone scam has surfaced.

These phone calls will tell you that your Social Security Number (SSN) has been suspended due to criminal activity. They say that your Social Security benefits can be cancelled as well.

SSN’s do not get cancelled or suspended. Do NOT talk to these people and do NOT call them back if they leave a voicemail.

The Sheriff’s Office has had someone talk to these scam callers and they attempt to set you up in order to ask you personal information, gain access to your credit history and steal your identity.

Please warn your elderly family and friends to not talk to anyone that calls them asking personal info, no matter how urgent they seem.

You will only be contacted by postal mail if the Social Security Office needs to advise you of anything, and even some mail can be FAKE. Please pay close attention.
