Man shot in New Market identified; died Wednesday afternoon


A man who was shot in New Market Wednesday morning after what is believed to be a domestic incident died Wednesday afternoon.

The man has been identified as Thomas Murphree. 

The woman who who was interviewed and released after the inicdent has been identified as Elyssa Nelson.

Investigators will forward the findings of their investigation to the District Attorney’s Office for presentation to a Grand Jury. 


ORIGINAL: One man was med flighted to Huntsville Hospital early Wednesday this morning after he was shot.

Police got the call around 3:00 AM from a 49-year-old man reporting he has been shot by a woman. The shooting happened at a home off of Buddy Williamson Rd in New Market.

According to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, first responders arrived to a man with gunshot wounds to a wrist and upper torso. He was med-flighted to Huntsville Hospital where he is receiving treatment for non life-threatening injuries.

The woman, who also called 911 from a neighbor’s house, was transported to the Criminal Investigation Division where she was interviewed and then released. She was taken by a family member to a hospital for evaluation and treatment.

Investigators aren’t sure exactly what happened, but are remaining on the scene to continue their search.

Donny Shaw with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, said the two involved in this incident are in a domestic relationship, and it is believed that a physical altercation between the male and female occupants of the residence resulted in the female shooting the male twice before she ran to the neighbors.
