American Girl Luciana Vega goes to Space Camp

Character in the popular series will go to Space Camp on her journey to Mars

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center & American Girl have partnered to tell the story of Luciana Vega, a girl who loves space and wants to go to Mars. Part of her journey takes her to Space Camp.

American Girl, part of Mattel, Inc., worked closely with NASA and the U.S. Space and Rocket Center to make sure that Luciana's story was accurate and would give true insight into the life of a Space Camp trainee and future astronaut.

Among those on the four member advisory panel were Rocket Center’s CEO and Executive Director, Dr. Deborah Barnhart, as well as Dr. Ellen Stofan, former NASA Chief Scientist, Dr. Megan McArthur Behnken, NASA Astronaut, and Maureen O’Brien, Manager of Strategic Alliances at NASA.

Over the course of many months, a team of American Girl editors and product designers visited Space Camp and NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. American Girl’s partnership with NASA was developed through the Space Act Agreement to inform and inspire the wider public and in particular young girls about the excitement of space and STEM careers.

The 18-inch Luciana doll, her first two books, and accessories including a Mars Habitat and Space Camp flight suit will be available on January 1st. A selection of these, including her Space Camp graduation certificate, will be available at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center the first week of January.
