Jackson County man arrested for 2017 murder of his father

A two-year investigation in Jackson County led to the arrest of a man for the murder of his father in 2017.

Byron Keith Shirey, 58 of Dutton, AL, was arrested on September 17 in connection with the May 24, 2017 murder of his father, Charles Shirey. The murder took place at the elder Shirey’s home at County Road 372 in Dutton. Shirey’s death was determined be caused by blunt force trauma.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office says the arrest was the result of a two-year long investigation by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division and Jackson County District Attorney’s Office, with substantial assistance from the Alabama State Bureau of Investigations (SBI), the Alabama Attorney General (AG) Office, and the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences (DFS). The evidence obtained during this investigation was presented to a Grand Jury seated in Jackson County, Alabama during the week of September 9th, 2019 and resulted in a “true bill” on Byron Keith Shirey for the charge of murder.

Shirey was arrested without incident at his residence in Dutton, and was placed in the Jackson County Jail on a $250,000 bond.
