Huntsville Utilities warns to call 8-1-1 before you dig

News

A natural gas leak was reported in North Huntsville this week and Huntsville Utilities officials want you to know what to do if you smell natural gas.

A Huntsville Utilities spokesperson says to get away from the smell and call your utilities company or 9-1-1. He says more people will start digging in their yards and gardening as the weather warms up, but to call 8-1-1 before you do. They’ll come make sure you won’t hit a gas line.

“The most important thing is safety so just call 8-1-1 even if you’re just digging in your yard,” said Joe Gehrdes. “There could be a gas line there, could be your gas line. So we want  to make sure we locate that for you so we don’t put anyone in danger.”

He says since there’s been so much construction in town they’ve had to check for gas lines a lot more often.
