Huntsville homeless shelters asking for summer essentials ahead of hot weather

As the country prepares for hurricane season local groups in the Valley are prepping to help people who are homeless, beat the heat.

When the weather gets hot and humid most of us can think of obvious ways to stay cool. The Huntsville Fire Department recommends to, ‚Äústay in the shade as much as you can, if you have a place, take advantage of the AC.”

But for people who are homeless, finding ways to beat the heat becomes harder and summer months for them can even be life-threatening.

“An added number of people do seek residency in homeless shelters in the summer at times, so that is definitely a problem where people can’t stay cool, where they’re living,” said Tayna Rain the Executive Director of New Futures Inc.

Various homeless shelters including New Futures Inc. and the Downtown Rescue Mission are collecting items like tarps, light colored clothing and sunglasses, so they’ll be prepared for the scorching summer.

“It’s important that all of our families are protected when they’re outside so we really encourage donations of sunscreen, bug spray, water, Gatorade, things like that are really important so we that we have those items available for our families during the summer,” said Tayana.
