Huntsville City Schools Superintendent releases statement on loss of Nigel Shelby

News

Following the death of Nigel Shelby, Huntsville City Schools Superindentent Christie Finley issued a statement about the incident Monday morning.

During Huntsville City Schools’ Board of Education Meeting Monday, April 22, Superindentent Christie Finley took a moment to speak on the loss of Huntsville High School student Nigel Shelby, who died by suicide after allegedly being bullied for his sexuality.

Finley said, “As adults, we have to do more than simply teach these values; we have to model them.”

She goes on to say preaching the Golden Rule of treating others the way you want to be treated is only half the battle and that everyone should be keeping the Shelby family in their thoughts and prayers.

“It’s clear to me that the simple word of the golden rule has become more difficult for many to understand and to practice. It’s time as a society that you respect and uplift one another,” She said.

Additionally, Huntsville High School Freshman Academy Principal Jo Stafford released a statement in a weekly robocall to students and families:

“I want to thank you as an administrator, a mother, and grandmother for the outpouring of support and love you have shown Nigel Shelby’s mom and her family.  We are a family at Huntsville High and as a family, we stand together.  This freshman class will persevere and stand strong, because I know that our parents, teachers, counselors and leaders will always surround our children with love, prayers and guidance….every child deserves our best and I will always give your child my best…”

On Saturday, April 20, Huntsville High School PTSA’s facebook released a statement from Huntsville High School’s Principal, Aaron King. In addition to saying that his and the schools’ thoughts and prayers were with the Shelby family, King urged parents to be mindful of the grieving process students may experience after the loss of a classmate.
