Historic, storm-damaged building torn down in Decatur

A historic building in downtown Decatur that was damaged by storms last spring is now a pile of scraps.

The demolition of the building, which took up most of the block on 2nd Avenue and Moulton Street, started Sunday. WZDX News hasn’t heard back yet from the property owner about what the space will be used for next. The city’s director of development doesn’t think there’s a plan yet, but folks hope it goes along with the entertainment district.

“It’s sad to see those old buildings go because they have so much history in them,” said Scott Hamilton who works in the area. “Maybe they’ll put something neat in there now.”

“What would you like to see?” WZDX News asked.

“Oh I don’t know, maybe a theater or something,” Hamilton replied.

The storm took off the building’s roof. The Morgan County archivist says it was built around the turn of the 19th century.
