Through the “Open Hearts, Open Books” book drive, parents and community members can help build high-quality K-2 libraries in every Huntsville City Schools elementary school.

All Huntsville City Schools elementary schools will be collecting new and gently used children’s books from January 14, 2019 to February 15, 2019. The books that are collected will be equally redistributed throughout the school district to ensure all 26 schools will receive high-quality children’s literature.

Collection boxes will be clearly labeled and placed in the front office of each elementary school.

The school has a few suggestions when it comes to books:

– Beginning Readers (books with 1-2 sentences per page and 2-4 letter words)
– I Can Read! titles (especially the My First, level 1 and level 2 books)
– All level children’s books with multicultural subjects
– Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Captain Underpants chapter books

They’ve also provided a list of great authors:

– Dr. Seuss
– Eric Carle
– Kevin Henkes
– Leo Lionni
– Bill Martin, Jr.
– Maurice Sendak
– P.D. Eastman
