FAA investigating Southwest Airlines errors

News

The FAA is investigating how Southwest Airlines calculates the weight of checked bags in a probe that started a year ago.

According to the Wall Street Journal, which broke the story, FAA officials and agency documents indicate airline workers made mistakes, which caused pilots to calculate the wrong weight of planes at takeoffs.

Those errors occasionally caused the reported takeoff weights to be a thousand pounds below the plane’s actual weight.

The FAA has not found any accidents related to the discrepancies.

In a statement, the airline said, “Southwest believes the controls and procedures we implemented throughout 2018 have enhanced our weight and balance program and resolved the issues that we originally reported to the FAA.”

The journal, citing people familiar with the probe, reports the FAA has not decided whether it will fine or otherwise punish the airline.
